Samsung are rumoured to be preparing the launch of a follow-up to the Galaxy Tab; a 10.1 inch tablet device, running Google Android’s new Honeycomb OS.
The rumours state that Samsung’s new tablet will be smaller, thinner and lighter than its predecessor, with a larger screen and black trim as opposed to the Galaxy’s white. The as yet unnamed tablet has been dubbed Galaxy 2 by bloggers and will be debuted at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona next week.
After the somewhat disappointing performance of the Galaxy in the marketplace, Samsung are hoping that this follow up will present a serious challenge to the dominance of Apple, who are gearing up to release iPad 2. They will also be hoping that this release sees off the threat from the other pretender to the throne; the Motorola Xoom.
Prior to the MWC event, specifications are rather thin on the ground. The anonymous device is rumoured to be featuring a dual-core Qualcomm chip as well as an impressive 8 mega pixel camera, but little else is known.
Samsung are also planning to minimise wasted bezel space and maximise ergonomic potential by producing a slightly smaller tablet than the iPad, but with a slightly larger screen.
Speculators had talked of a 9 inch tablet, due to be launched alongside the Android 3.0 running device, although this dual release now looks unlikely.
We now cannot wait until MWC to see what Samsung have got in store for us.

Samsung have unveiled their reduced power, 30nm DDR memory at the CeBIT event in Hannover.
The company have been quick to play up the green credentials of their new memory, as tech-firms begin to feel the pressure of government initiatives to reduce domestic carbon emissions.
In addition to the low power consumption, the 30nm, ‘green’ memory also runs at a lower temperature than standard memory units, which tend to set the mercury flying to around 59 degrees Celsius. The 30nm memory remains at a cool average temperature of 51 degrees Celsius.
It is this feature, that Samsung believe will help overcome the problems mentioned at CeBIT’s ‘cloud conference’, in which a panel of experts debated the pros and possible cons of cloud computing.
While the panel were, on the whole, optimistic, they offered some words of caution to anyone getting too excited by cloud technology, stating that the less than 100% reliability of current internet services, coupled with the insane amount of work servers and data centres would have to do to handle the requisite data could delay the development of the tech.
Whilst not ticking all the boxes, the low running temperature and energy consumption of Samsung’s new memory could be a step in the right direction, and will definitely be welcome news to server operators anticipating a meltdown when cloud computing finally takes off.

Samsung has confirmed the launch of an updated version of the Galaxy Tab, which has been named after its screen size of 10.1 inches.
The launch of a Honeycomb-operated competitor for the iPad had been strongly rumoured for this week’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona but Samsung has now officially unveiled its newest tablet offering.
Powered by Tegra 2 dual-core processors, the up-dated Tab will be the first from Samsung to take on the iPad in the same size category and the Korean electronics giant is billing its release as an “entertainment powerhouse”.
“As a leader in the Android-powered tablet market, Samsung is committed to providing a variety of feature-rich, always-on devices,” said DJ Lee, executive vice president and head of sales and marketing for the company.
“The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a valuable addition to our expanding portfolio of smart media devices. Sporting a large 10.1 screen and dual surround-sound speakers, it enables users to enjoy multimedia to the maximum extent without having to compromise mobility.”
Cameras are installed front and back on the new Tab and is to be made available with either 16GB or 32GB of storage capacity.
Several tablets running on the Honeycomb version of Google’s Android operating system are set to be introduced into world markets over the course of the coming weeks and months, with most analysts expecting the devices to take at least a bite out of Apple’s near-90 per cent market share.

Samsung has hit back at claims that that return rates of its Galaxy Tab slate were as high as 16 per cent in the US.
The company say its own data shows just fewer than two per cent of Samsung Galaxy Tab’s sold in the US were sent back.
The claim appeared on a Korean blog following reports that far more people were returning the Samsung device than its Apple rival the iPad.
Tech Radar quotes the statement as reading: “The return rate of the Galaxy Tab in the US as claimed by a North American market research firm is incorrect. According to Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications Business the return rate is below 2 percent.”
Earlier this week Samsung had to refute its own claims that two million of the tablets have been sold, saying that these were sales to retail partners not consumers.
And a wrong translation also left Samsung red faced recently – Samsung executive Lee Young was quoted as saying sales of the tablet were “quite small” when he actually said “quite smooth”.

Samsung saw sales of its Android-operated Galaxy Tab pass the two million mark during the final quarter of last year as it aimed to gain ground on the market-leading iPad from Apple.
Both the Galaxy S smartphone and the Galaxy Tab tablet PC ranges have been selling strongly in recent months and are currently leading the chase for second in what are two of the newest and most dynamic mobile computing sectors.
Apple was responsible for opening up the tablet PC market in earnest just under a year ago and rival consumer tech giants have been scrambling for position ever since. Samsung was the first to introduce a slate device that operates on Google’s Android system but the competition in this context is set to intensify considerably over the next few months and throughout 2011.
Even with the Galaxy Tab having sold two million units and proven popular with consumers worldwide over the Christmas period, the iOS iPad still out-sold Samsung’s flagship slate by a full five million units in the most recently assessed period.
Much has been made about the lack of an Android OS designed specifically for tablet PCs, with Apple’s chief operating officer Tim Cook going as far as describing iPad’s rivals as “vapour” and suggesting they are nothing more than “scaled-up smartphone”.
Such criticism could soon be wide of the mark however with a Honeycomb version of the system set to be featuring in Motorola’s up-coming tablet and probably a long list of other devices before the year is out.
