Intel sought to end any doubts about the future of their MeeGo OS for tablets by demoing the platform at MWC.

The operating system – a joint venture with Nokia – had been thrown into doubt by leaked memos suggesting the Finnish mobile company were in trouble, but now it seems that Intel wish to forge ahead with it.

Nokia appear to have put the project on the backburner after CEO Stephen Elop’s realisation that the rollout timescale would be too slow to be viable for Nokia, who instead struck a deal with Microsoft.

This week at the Mobile World Congress even in Barcelona, Intel boss, Paul Otellini remained confident about the project despite Nokia actions, announcing that his company would be pushing on with MeeGo;

“I don’t see that Nokia changing its strategy changes the industry strategy,” Otellini said. “The operators still look for an open, operator-friendly operating system”.

If the demo is anything to go by, then we owe Intel a debt of gratitude in carrying on with the development; the user interface is made up of ‘Minority Report’ style panels which swipe left and right to select a panel, and then up and down to scroll. Content is separated into clearly delineated panels, labelled things like ‘friends’, ‘media’ and ‘web’.

Intel also hinted that they are planning to develop business applications using the panels in the near future, placing MeeGo tablets into competition with RIM’s business minded PlayBook.
