Apple line-up “iPad 2.5” mini-tablet

Apple are rumoured to be developing a 7-inch tablet, to be released after the iPad 2 in the second half of 2011.

Apple head honcho, Steve Jobs has previously gone on record dismissing such devices as ‘tweeners’, but apparently now his company is willing to invest in these stepping-stone slates.

Don’t let the “iPad 2.5” headline mislead though, AppleInsider blogger, Daniel Eran Dilger has indicated that the device will be more “big iPod touch” than little iPad.

“Given the company’s regular critiscisms of competitors’ half-sized tablet offerings, Apple will almost certainly not deliver a tweener iPad,” Dilger wrote. “However, they may be interested in delivering an oversized iPod touch intended to fill the gap between its 3.5, smart phone sized iOS devices and its full 9.7 inch iPad”.

Dilger continued, stating that an upscaled iPod touch would still have a larger pixel density than the existing iPad.

“The existing iPod touch’s resolution of 230ppi screen density, stretched across a 7-inch screen would deliver 164ppi, still higher than the existing iPad’s pixel density of 164ppi”.

Apple evidently feel that joining battle on another front, and increasing their product diversity in the face of Google Android’s onslaught, will better position them against the raft of incoming tablet devices. We will just have to wait until later in the year to see if these rumours are true or not.
