Murdoch: Tablets will kill laptops
Rupert Murdoch has told reporters that he believes the growth of the tablet market will lead to the death of laptops.
The News Corporation CEO made the statement in an interview with Fox Business Network to promote The Daily, the new daily digital newspaper that launched on the iPad this week.
“I really believe that everybody in America who can afford one is going to buy a tablet,” he added. “I think this is the end of the laptop.”
When asked about the revenue share, which sees Apple take 30% off all The Daily subscriptions, Murdoch said: “That’s subject to negotiation.”
While Murdoch may not be a fan of Apple’s business model, he did heap praise on Steve Jobs.
He said: “Here we have the man who invented the personal computer, then the laptop. He’s now destroying them. That is an amazing life.”
And in related news, Murdoch said that The Daily will be branching out onto other tablets in the future at app’s launch.
He said The Daily will be exclusive to Apple for some time yet while its competitors catch up but it will be available on them when they do.
