Samsung Galaxy Tab Samsung Galaxy Tabs – 2m sold and counting at laptopshop.co.ukSamsung saw sales of its Android-operated Galaxy Tab pass the two million mark during the final quarter of last year as it aimed to gain ground on the market-leading iPad from Apple.

Both the Galaxy S smartphone and the Galaxy Tab tablet PC ranges have been selling strongly in recent months and are currently leading the chase for second in what are two of the newest and most dynamic mobile computing sectors.

Apple was responsible for opening up the tablet PC market in earnest just under a year ago and rival consumer tech giants have been scrambling for position ever since. Samsung was the first to introduce a slate device that operates on Google’s Android system but the competition in this context is set to intensify considerably over the next few months and throughout 2011.

Even with the Galaxy Tab having sold two million units and proven popular with consumers worldwide over the Christmas period, the iOS iPad still out-sold Samsung’s flagship slate by a full five million units in the most recently assessed period.

Much has been made about the lack of an Android OS designed specifically for tablet PCs, with Apple’s chief operating officer Tim Cook going as far as describing iPad’s rivals as “vapour” and suggesting they are nothing more than “scaled-up smartphone”.

Such criticism could soon be wide of the mark however with a Honeycomb version of the system set to be featuring in Motorola’s up-coming tablet and probably a long list of other devices before the year is out.
