The latest leak from the Apple camp indicates that the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 will be able to use “near-field communication” technology.

Near-field communication – or NFC – allows compatible devices to communicate data over a short distance, probably no more than about four inches.

The technology uses extremely short-range radio waves to exchange information; experts say that this technology could be used for advertising, file sharing or even replacing traditional payment cards.

Developers of the technology say that NFC will allow the user to make quick payments on small transactions – buying a newspaper for example – simply by placing their smartphone or tablet close to a compatible NFC reader.

Apple are not the first company to introduce this technology; Google’s Nexus Android phone – released late last year – is also NFC compatible. However, the sheer level of consumer interest generated by Apple’s new devices will gain the new technology some serious momentum.

The loose lipped engineers also hinted that the two devices are scheduled for release later this year, so we might not have to wait long to see people waving their iPads at the checkout and walking off with a bar of chocolate.
