Apple stylus patent /Apple InsiderThe Apple iPad 2 may get a stylus in an about turn that could see the manufacturer marketing the tablet as an educational device.

Despite a patent for an Apple tablet stylus having been filed in 2008, the company has seemed very uninterested in actually producing one.

Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs has even gone so far as to suggest that our fingers are the “ultimate pointing device”.

However, Apple is investigating developing the stylus as part of a campaign to increase sales of the iPad to schools and students, reports the New York Times.

A source told the paper: “one of the barriers for school kids and college students to purchase an iPad where they want the ability to take notes by hand and draw in class.”

The patent had suggested different types of styli, including a desk pivot and powered conductive tip for writing on a capacitive touchscreen.

Microsoft may not be too happy about the news – the company has been working on pen-based tablets that they hoped would be pioneering to capture the education market.
