MeeGo’s future uncertain as Nokia continue to struggle
Finnish phone giant, Nokia have cast doubt on the future of their MeeGo OS as they continue to battle financial hardship.
Doubt has arisen over the future of the operating system after a leaked internal memo from CEO, Stephen Elop described Nokia’s platform as “burning”.
Whether he was speaking figuratively or whether he was referring directly to the demise of the MeeGo platform is open to interpretation, but Mr Elop’s memo did highlight some severe worries about the future of the company:
“Over the past few months, I’ve shared with you what I’ve heard from our shareholders, operators, developers, suppliers and from you,” Mr Elop wrote. “Today I’m going to share what I’ve learned and what I have come to believe: I have learned that we are standing on a burning platform.”
Mr Elop’s evocative memo blamed corporate rigidity and a lack of innovation for the company’s predicament, acknowledging that other companies were now getting the better of the once dominant Finns.
The memo builds towards an emotional climax, ending positively and talking about the need to take a “bold and brave step into an uncertain future”. This – again – is open to interpretation; will Nokia make one final role of the dice and take a gamble on MeeGo? Or will they abandon the venture all together and concentrate their efforts elsewhere?
Nokia plan to unveil their new strategy on February 11th; hopefully we will get some answers regarding the future of MeeGo.
