ipad 2 Apple iPad update in production at laptopshop.co.ukAn updated version of the iPad is already in production and could be heading the way of consumers within the next couple of months, according to reports.

Citing sources familiar with Apple’s progress on the tablet PC front, the Wall Street Journal has claimed that a lighter and thinner iPad is currently being put together by Foxconn and should soon be on the market.

Faster processing capabilities are promised of the iPad 2 and a built-in camera designed in part for use with video-conferencing technology is also likely to be featured, as has been rumoured for some time.

More memory power and better graphics are reportedly part of the package as well but some Apple fans could be disappointed by a supposed lack of display screen resolution improvements.

The launch of the iPad 2 is expected to be one of the most noteworthy releases in a year set to be littered with tablet PC introductions to rival the initial Apple slate that faired so well in 2010. Close to 15 million iPads have been sold globally to date and most analysts are expecting to see tens of millions of fresh units sold over the course of 2011.

Apple is yet to confirm any rumours or speculation on the prospect of a new and improved iPad but it’s chief operating officer Tim Cook recently made clear that his company is “not standing still” in the tablet sector.

The iPad remains by far and away the largest selling tablet on the market but, with several high-profile rivals set to be launched this half, Strategy Analytics recently tipped Android-operated slates to out-number iOS equivalents within the next two years.
