Sainsbury’s Celebrate Record High

Sainsbury’s were celebrating yesterday after an annual winter sales report announced that they had reclaimed the number two spot in the pecking order of grocers from Asda.

The reports shows that the supermarket saw a rise of 3.6 percent for the 14-weeks up to January 8, while in-shop sales hit a record high of 24.5 million in the week running up to Christmas.

The increase highlights the efforts of Justin King – who was brought in as the company’s last chance to win back market share from its rivals and remain independent. The achievement also dwarfed Morrison’s who only made a 1 percent like-for-like turnaround.

However, there will be a slight drizzle on the fireworks at the news that although Sainsbury’s have regained the number two spot, they face the uphill task of having to catch world conquerors Tesco.

Tesco’s Christmas trade update will be released today (Thursday) which is expected to show a positive turnaround. But HMV, Next and Debenhams all suffered a slide in sales.

King was keen to thank all of the colleagues for Sainsbury’s all-time-high which came despite the adverse weather conditions that saw online retail sales take a dip:

King said: “This record Christmas was delivered despite challenging weather conditions and our colleagues worked extremely hard to deliver great service to our customers, serving over 24.5 million customers in the seven days up to and including Christmas Eve.”

A lot of the success can be greatly attributed to the Taste the Difference range which saw their £1B relaunch prove to be very popular over the festive period - especially for the Norfolk Black Woodland free-range turkeys which made a 30% rise.

It was a good year for Sainsbury’s who managed an incredible turnaround and are still seeing the benefits. Their gamble focus on non-food sales such as clothing, DVDs and electrical items, are growing at three times the rate of food.

And MyVoucherCodes are celebrating a great 2010 with Sainsbury’s by offering first time shoppers an Exclusive £15 Off Groceries Over £75. However, regular shoppers can also join in the celebrations by picking from a great selection of Sainsbury’s discount codes.
