Processor company, AMD have announced that they have shipped over one million Fusion chips. AMD’s Fusion project sought to develop a single chip that combined both graphics and CPU functions. The chips are aimed at lightweight, low power devices. Previous publicity for the Zacate Fusion chip has claimed that the technology allows full functionality in a single chip measuring only 75 sq. mm, and with a power consumption of only 18 watts; it is this capability that has generated such interest in the platform. Thomas Seifert – who is interim CEO at AMD following the resignation of Dirk Mayer last week – talked of huge interest in the Fusion chips from numerous PC manufacturers and that orders from companies such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba have helped sales of the chip reach the million mark. As yet no devices are available containing the chips, but with such a high level of interest by so many manufacturers, this will not be the case for long.
AMD’s Fusion range also includes the even less power-hungry Ontario chip, rated at only 9 watts; Toshiba have already announced that this chip will feature inside their NB550D netbook, due for release in March of 2011.
