Lenovo are the latest player to wade into the already crowded tablet market with the release of their LePad device.
Unfortunately, phase one of the LePad’s launch covers only China, with the device scheduled to reach UK shelves by June.
At the CES event in January, Lenovo announced that the LePad would be launched alongside a companion piece – the IdeaPad U1 – a device with a physical keyboard which would dock with the LePad and allow the device to double boot Windows 7 as well as Android. The current release has left observers puzzled as to when the U1 will become available.
Lenova have delayed the release of the U1 before; in January 2010 Lenovo announced that the IdeaPad U1 would be released in June of that year, now it appears that the tablet component will be first onto the shelves.
The LePad weighs around 2 pounds and features a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. Other features include a Qualcomm 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, WiFi connectivity with 3G as an option, and 16GB of memory. A 32GB version is available with both WiFi or 3G and WiFi.
There was some speculation that Lenovo might upgrade the device run to Google’s latest Android platform, Honeycomb, before the release of the product, but it appears that this is not the case. The LePad runs Android 2.2, or ‘Froyo’, instead of the v.3.0, which is specifically optimised for tablet computers.
UK consumers can get their hands on the device from June.

Visual-technology company, ViewSonic has weighed in with a new tablet device, the 10 inch View Pad 10Pro, which will be able to dual-boot both Windows 7 and Android 2.2.
The ViewPad will be released alongside the V350 dual-SIM smartphone, which will allow users to operate different accounts and phone numbers for personal and business usage.
The double release is the product of research by ViewSonic into what users want from tablet and smartphone devices; the answer they found was convergence and devices that can be equally used for business and personal use.
The ViewPad is powered by an Intel Oak Trail processor chip, supporting Flash 10.1. The device boasts a 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen with an LED backlight, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and six hours of battery life.
Other features include a 5 mega pixel camera with auto-focus, Micro-SD expansion and GPS navigation.
ViewSonic’s European product marketing manager, Derek Wright believes that the dual-boot feature of the ViewPad will make it more than a match for its competition in the market:
“Last month, Deloitte predicted in its annual sector forecast that UK companies will buy more than 10 million tablet devices in 2011,” Wright said. “ViewSonic is well placed to capitalise on this market and offers the best of both worlds from one device.”
ViewSonic will be conducting demonstrations of the ViewPad at next week’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.

The Daily – Apple’s digital newspaper for the iPad – has officially launched in the US.
The ‘paper’ is a project run jointly by Apple and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp; it will be downloadable from the Apple App Store, with weekly subscriptions costing 99cents – or $39.99 for a year.
Murdoch was gushing with praise for Apple as he and Apple’s Vice President of Internet Services, Eddy Cue unveiled The Daily at New York City’s Guggenheim Museum.
“We’re honoured that Apple has put its backing behind this venture,” he said. “Simply put, the iPad demands we [the media] completely re-imagine our craft.”
Murdoch continued to describe the benefits of the digital version of The Daily, including interactive 360 degree photographs and customisable sports feeds. The 79-year old news mogul also stated his desire to grow the project to include other tablet devices.
“We have been quite honest with Apple,” Murdoch continued. “We expect to be on all major tablets. But we believe this year and maybe next year really belong to Apple.”
The Daily will continue to produce its regular, newsprint edition, but will use the iPad to experiment with different kinds of news distribution as well as developing news tailored to the interests of the individual.
Eddy Cue also took the time to announce the impending introduction of other app subscriptions, available through the Apple App Store. These apps will allow customers access to continuously rolled out contract over the duration of their subscription.

Laptop and netbook giant Asus has introduced a new range of hard disk drive (HDD) products branded along the sleek and slender lines of the car-maker Lamborghini.
The product launch builds on an existing tie-in between the Asian consumer tech company and the iconic Italian motoring brand that last year saw the launch of a new Lambo-branded Asus laptop.
Associations with the style value of Lamborghini appear to have bumped the price up a little though, with the cost of one of Asus’ newest 750GB HDDs reportedly running at $139 and a 500GB option costing just $20 less. European pricing is yet to be made available.
If content transfer speed is you thing then you might want to invest in a USB 3.0 version of the new external devices, which Asus reckons will get you across the figurative finish line up to ten times more quickly then USB 2.0 alternatives.
Keen to squeeze every pun and motoring analogy it can out of its link-up with the famous European car-maker, Asus explains that its top-end HDDs are “the muscle cars of storage, delivering a whopping 640GB of space with easy USB connectivity”.
“Evoking the trademark aerodynamic flow of Lamborghini cars, these external hard drives stand out from the accessory crowd with an eye-catching design that can’t be missed.”
Asus has been one of the world’s leading suppliers of laptops and netbooks in recent years and it has made clear its intention to stake a claim on the fast-growing tablet PC sector, currently dominated by Apple and the iPad. Indeed, the company’s bosses have set a ten per cent share of the non-iPad tablet market as one of their main aims for 2011.

Toshiba has launched a new range of hard disk drive (HDD) memory products designed for use with the latest mobile computing devices, including tablet PCs, netbooks and laptops.
Three separate HDD models are to be made available from next month and will make up the Mkxx39GSLseries, with the different products offering 160GB, 200GB and 220GB respectively.
At just 1.8 inches in size, the new range of hard drives are reckoned to be more energy efficient and more robust than their 2.5 inch predecessors and therefore better suited to use with the increasing variety of mobile computing devices on the market.
Maciek Brzeski, vice president of mobile marketing at Toshiba’s storage device division, said: “Designers of next-generation consumer electronics, tablets and mobile devices need disk drives that will stand up to the demands of day-to-day usage in a world increasingly defined by mobility and connectivity to all forms of content.
“These newest members of our 1.8” family are designed to meet those demands.”
Toshiba claims to be the world’s principal pioneer of 1.8 inch hard drives, having introduced the industry’s first back in 2000. The company also cites IDC figures showing that it accounted for more than 90 per cent of all the 1.8 inch hard drives sold worldwide during the third quarter of last year.
Like most of the world’s major consumer technology suppliers, Toshiba is increasingly turning its attention to the tablet PC sector and recently launched a new website designed to promote its up-coming but as-yet-unnamed 10.1 inch Android-operated slate device.

British Telecom has launched a new app designed to make it easier for its home broadband customers to get online using their Apple iPads.
With two million Wi-Fi hotspots around the UK, BT is among the leading suppliers of internet coverage in the country and its iPad app follows similar offerings for users of Android operated tablets and smartphones.
A mapping service, making clear where your nearest Wi-Fi hotspot is, comes along with the free app, which can now be downloaded by iPad owners around the country, as long as they are on one of BT’s relevant tariffs.
“Our free app for the iPhone and Android devices has proved a huge hit with over 400,000 downloads to date, so launching an app for the iPad was naturally the next step,” commented John Petter, managing director of BT Retail Consumer.
“The app makes accessing Wi-Fi so simple you don’t even have to think about it and represents real value to our customers at a time when more and more people are accessing the internet when they are on the move.”
BT’s Wi-Fi zones tend to be in the busier spots around British cities, coffee shops, motorway service stations, hotels etc and you’ll need a BT internet address and home broadband password in order to get online using your iPad in any of these various locations.
Rumours are currently flying around about what we can expect from a second iteration of the all-conquering iPad, with some sources suggesting they’ll have a front-facing camera and that the graphics capacity will be notably increased.

The National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD), the Number One Bank in the UAE, has become the first bank in the UAE to launch a solar-powered ATM.
NBADs first solar ATM became operational this week at Al Bateen Branch in Abu Dhabi. Its launch coincided with the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), taking place in Abu Dhabi January 17-19, which NBAD sponsors, and where speakers from NBAD will present to the forum the Banks sustainable initiatives and strategy.
We are proud to be the first bank in the UAE to launch a green ATM, says Suvo Sarkar, the General Manager of Consumer & Elite Banking at NBAD. As the Number One Bank in the UAE, NBAD strives to be at the forefront of offering superior banking products and services. As part of our CSR initiatives, we hope to be the ‘trend-setter’ in adopting solar power for future ATMs in this country.
Mr. Sarkar adds: NBADs rollout of solar-powered ATMs will reduce our carbon footprint, and presumably act as an example of how banks can contribute to the sustainability of the environment.
The NBAD’s green ATM, launched in cooperation with Apex Power Concepts, is powered by solar panels installed on the branchs roof. The panels are connected to a circuit breaker board, which feeds a power controller where part of the collected energy is stored for the ATMs night operation.
NBAD aims to eventually implement this solution in all NBAD branches as well as at stand alone offsite ATMs. The Bank has one of the largest branch and ATM network in the country with more than 110 branches and 429 ATMs all over the UAE.
CSR at NBAD is a way of doing business. Therefore, we adopt methods and technologies that are aligned with this strategy, said Ahmed Al Naqbi, the Head of Channels & Electronic Banking Services at NBAD. In addition to delivering quality products and services, NBAD differentiates itself in the market by its corporate sustainability credentials.
NBAD also plans to rollout eco-friendly cards that have been produced from recycled products. Mr. Al Naqbi will present the Bank’s initiatives and plans to launch more sustainable products at World Future Energy Summit (WFES), which commences today in Abu Dhabi.
Belinda Scott, the Senior Manager of CSR at NBAD, will present the Bank’s CSR strategy and initiatives at WFES.
NBAD has one of the regions most energetic Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility (CSR) programmes. NBAD is the first UAE bank to publish its annual Sustainability Report, which follows established global guidelines, and the Bank is a founding member of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group and a member of its General Secretariat.
