Dell Adamo /CNetMacBook Air rival the Dell Adamo is to be discontinued but will allegedly be replaced by a new design within six months.

The thin and powerful Windows laptop was announced two years to much fan fare – like its Apple rival it also had an aluminium case.

It’s fairly ground breaking use of sold-state drives and an optional built-in 3G card came with a hefty price tag though, with prices ranging from US $2,000 (around £1,251) at its launch.

While it also had a 13.4-inch screen (just bigger than the MacBook Air’s) and an impressive 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution, it was still considered to be too pricey for many consumers.

Many critics argued its Intel Core 2 Duo Core processors and poor battery life were not worthy of its price tag.

Dell had tried to rectify price issues by offering big discounts on new Adamo laptops, CNet quotes a source as saying.

The source also claims that the Dell will develop the Adamo’s design in a new design by the end of July – a likely scenario given Dell’s recent announcements about a raft of new products coming to market.

The new device is likely to be launched as part of one of Dell’s other popular brands, such as Inspiron, XPS or Alienware.

The news follows Dell’s decision to discontinue the Adamo XPS.
