Transparent recruitment drive for UK airports

Glyn Jones and Holly, Luton Airport Spot the hologram ... it is Holly, next generation employee

London Luton Airport has taken on two new members of staff – holograms dressed as employees.

The two holograms, Graham and Holly, look so realistic that passengers have been trying to chat to them and hand them their boarding cards.

Using the same computer-generated technology as the Damon Albarn-fronted band Gorillaz, the holograms offer passengers advice on how to prepare for their flights and advise them on security procedures such as putting liquids into plastic bags.

Louise Ross, spokeswoman for the hologram's creator, Tensator, said, “Holly and Graham are part of an initiative to simplify the security process and flow of lineups.”

Manchester Airport is following in Luton's footsteps, introducing two holograms of current employees to passengers last week. Each hologram stands behind a podium and offers advice on travel safety and security, but can be programmed to say virtually anything...so tempting...

Manchester spokesperson John Greenway said to the Star newspaper, “I think the staff are still finding it quite strange. They’re standing right next to them all day watching themselves.”

The Manchester holograms, created by Musion, are part of a trial to try and improve customer service within the airport. They are created by a projection kit which beams light in the shape of a person from behind a glass mirror.

Mr Greenway added, “They could be used to direct people to terminals and parking-payment areas, or stand near escalators to warn flyers not to place extremely heavy suitcases on them, which has been a specific problem for the airport.”
