Sharm el Sheikh Red Sea Resorts ... FCO advises that area is calm

On Monday, 7 February 2011, the advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO - www.fco.gov.uk) about travelling to Egypt remains unchanged.

The FCO is warning against "all but essential travel to Cairo (all four governorates, including Giza), Alexandria, Luxor and Suez".

However, it states that the situation in the Red Sea Resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh or Hurghada "remains calm". Furthermore, the nationwide curfew (from 7pm to 6am local time) is "not being enforced in the Red Sea Resort area".

Thomas Cook and Thomson are Britain's biggest holiday companies. They too are insisting that the resorts have not been affected by the recent demonstrations.

In an alert on its website, Thomas Cook has said it has cancelled flights to Luxor scheduled for Wednesday, 9 February, from London Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester airports. Flights to Sharm el Sheikh continue to "operate as normal".

Thomson and First Choice (both part of the TUI group) have a similar line.

Flights to and from Luxor and Aswan have been cancelled. In resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada, Taba and Marsa Alam it is "business as usual".
