British Airways Fuel surcharges ... up, up and away

British Airways has upped its fuel surcharge for the second time in two months.

The soaring price of jet fuel is the reason behind the increased charge. The spot price of jet fuel has increased by 14 per cent since the last rise in mid-December 2010.

The new charge will come into effect on 8 February.

For flights lasting less than nine hours, the costs (per person each way) are:

Economy Class flights £75
Premium Economy flights £85
First Class flights £105

On flights lasting longer than nine hours, the charges are now:

Economy Class - £88
Premium Economy - £106.50
First Class - £125

A spokesman for British Airways told The Telegraph: "Fuel is our single biggest cost.

"We have a strong hedging strategy in place and try to off-set the rising cost of fuel where we can, but regrettably we have to pass some of the costs on to our customers."
