There was a distinct scent of opportunism in the air as AMD unveiled its new tagline, “Ready, Willing and Stable”, a less than subtle reference to the malfunctions experienced by their competitor’s chipsets following the release of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab.

The campaign, promoting AMD’s new Phenom II X6 processors, follows an even less subtle bit of PR from AMD on Valentine’s Day when the company sent out ‘condolence packages’ to noted tech writers. These packages included chocolates and cards offering AMD’s sincerest commiserations for the heartbreak caused by Sandy Bridge’s demise.

Kudos to AMD for not letting a trifling detail like the fact that Sandy Bridge’s flaws were relatively minor and easily put right get in the way of a ‘kick ‘em when they’re down’ advertising campaign.

It is still too early to tell whether the recent Sandy Bridge fiasco has irreversibly dented consumer confidence in Intel’s most recent chipset, but it is true to say that this campaign won’t be helping Intel’s cause. However, the ball is well and truly in Intel’s court with regard to how quickly and how effectively they bounce back from this stumbling block.

AMD, on the other hand, can’t be blamed for taking advantage of the misfortune of one of their most dangerous competitors.
