BBC to launch new iPlayer app for iPads and Android 2.2 this week
A new BBC iPlayer app for the Apple iPad and for Android 2.2 devices is set to be launched later this week, the broadcasting corporation has confirmed.
Dozens of BBC programmes are made available via the iPlayer website each week and the BBC has been working on improving the quality of the app used by owners of the latest mobile devices.
Daniel Denker, general manager of the BBC’s future media and technology operations, confirmed in a blog post that the “finishing touches” are being applied to the apps designed for use with Apple’s iPad and the various smartphones that run on the 2.2 version of Google Android OS.
“Having stuck our toe in the water last year with the iPad, this new native app is a significant improvement on the existing experience and it’s great to be on the Android platform too,” he explained.
“This is about getting the basics right, simple apps that makes best use of the portable touch-screen experience.”
Google’s Android OS has been the focus of much attention in the context of tablet PCs in recent weeks, with Motorola, among others, gearing up to introduce new mobile devices that run on a Honeycomb version of the increasing popular platform.
There’s no word yet on how the BBC will deliver its online content to users of the up-coming Android tablets but Mr Denker’s post suggested that his team will be “looking to build in more [iPlayer app] features throughout the year”.
