RIM claims Playbook’s batteries will outlast the iPad’s

Research In Motion (RIM) has claimed that its up-coming Blackberry Playbook tablet PC will arrive equipped with a battery capable of out-lasting the Apple iPad.

iPads have been selling like the proverbial hotcakes since their introduction in spring of last year and one of the most commendable and attractive aspects of the device has been its relatively lengthy battery life.

It now looks as if RIM is aiming to tackle the current market leader head on.

Until this week, the company’s vice president Jeff McDowell had been content to suggest the Playbook would boast a battery life “comparable” with Apple’s tablet offering but he has since taken a more bullish stance and said it’s capacity will be “equal or greater” than that of its principal rival.

RIM has a month or so to resolve any lingering issues with its much-anticipated tablet, with the industry generally expecting to see a Playbook made available in the US before the end of March this year.

The Canadian firm has done plenty of promotional work around its first foray into the sector but has a long way to go to catch the iPad, which currently boasts a massive lead in terms of tablet market share. Retaining the loyalty of its Blackberry smartphone users is clearly going to a major priority area as the device is released worldwide in the weeks to come.

As Mr McDowell was keen to suggest earlier this month: “Our heritage tells us there will be a huge uptake [of the Playbook] by BlackBerry consumers.”

However, as market analyst Steven Fox pointed out to Bloomberg recently: “Unlike smartphones, where iPhone had a high hurdle to overcome in penetrating enterprises dominated by incumbent RIM, the iPad is now the early incumbent in the enterprise that RIM would need to one-up in its features.”
