Nokia 5800 Express Music - At A Glance
Within just over two months of its launch, Nokia 5800 Express Music sales hit the 2 million mark. With so many other touchscreen mobiles trying but failing to depose the iphone as the most popular music phone on the market, what exactly have Nokia done right with the 5800 Express Music?
Nokia 5800 Express Music - looks and build quality
The Nokia 5800 Express Music is a pleasingly looking simple touchscreen mobile phone, boasting smooth corners and an overall sleek finish. Encased entirely in plastic, it doesn't feel as ‘luxurious' as the delightfully expensive-feeling iphone, but it is robust nonetheless and more than capable of withstanding the knocks, drops and general day-to-day rigours endured by your average mobile phone. The few external buttons the Nokia 5800 Express Music does have are well placed and comfortably reachable when in hand, sufficiently far enough from the touchscreen so as not to be too fiddly. The overall look of the device is great, and at 640 x 360 pixels, the screen looks superb too.
Better than the iphone for music? Definitely maybe
One of the first things that hits you about the Nokia 5800 Express Music is the quality of the speakers. The sound is crisp and clear with an all-round superb tone, and the volume cranks up to seriously loud levels while not losing notable quality. With 8GB internal storage and the option for an additional 16GB card, the Nokia 5800 Express Music can store up to 12,000 songs, and with a 3.5mm headphone jack it's compatible with standard headphones, which although not particularly amazing on first hearing is something of a rarity with music mobile phones.
Voice calls, music, alarms, and even the voice guided sat nav all benefit from the stunning sound quality, making the Nokia 5800 Express Music a highly versatile multimedia device as well as a great mobile phone.
Camera and video
The Nokia 5800 Express Music's 3.2 megapixel camera is on the face of it significantly better than the iphone, but in reality the overall quality of the end product is negligible. However, the inclusion of video capture is a major advantage over the iphone, reinforcing the suggestions on its launch that the exclusion of video altogether from the iphone was perhaps its biggest flaw. The Nokia 5800 Express Music capitalises on this Achilles Heel well, with its smooth, clear video quality.
