Facebook and Google tackle web threat
A host of big-name technology companies are working together on a project to stop us running out of web addresses.
Facebook, Google and Yahoo! are all signed up to promote Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) on June 8 – a new internet protocol that offers trillions of new web addresses .
The companies will enable IPv6 on their main websites on World iPv6 Day to test it and make people realise the need to upgrade to the system, with some experts predicting that we will run out of web addresses by November.
While most people will not notice any differences, some may experience connectivity problems.
Vint Cerf, is leading the global campaign to persuade consumers and businesses to switch to the new iPv6 system, currently only 0.2 per cent of web users have access to it.
If people stay on IPv4 they may not be able to access the new addresses, which are likely to be needed as more and more connected devices make it to market, such as the influx of tablet devices expected to be released this year.
