AMD to expand range in 2011
AMD announced launch plans for their “Llano” range, as well as an assault on the tablet market following the resignation of their CEO.
Notebooks featuring the “Llano” – a platform aimed at extremely lightweight devices –are expected to hit our shelves this summer. The production of the Llano follows AMD’s recently developed “Brazos” processing chip – an accelerated processing unit which emerged from the company’s celebrated Fusion initative.
These plans were unveiled during a conference call between executives at AMD and a group of analysts and journalists; a conference call that also revealed an expanded focus for the company.
The reluctance of former CEO, Dirk Meyer to pursue the booming tablet and smartphone market had been a source of friction between him and the board of directors at AMD. Now – a week after Mayer’s resignation – AMD’s board talk of “accelerating” efforts in these new areas.
However, AMD will not be abandoning their existing product lines: “[This acceleration] is certainly not an indication that we are going to let the focus shift away from what the priorities are in terms of delivering what we promised”, said Thomas Siefert, AMD’s interim CEO.
The expanded focus came as AMD reported revenues of $1.65 billion in the 4th quarter of 2010; a figure identical to the one posted from the same period of 2009.
