Acer aiming to increase netbook sales
Acer is reportedly hoping to increase the number of netbooks it ships this year and is expecting to see a number of its rivals in the sector switch their attentions to tablet PCs.
The Taiwanese firm is one of the largest players in the netbook market worldwide and is apparently keen to maintain and possibly even strengthen that position.
There have been rumours recently that Acer would phase out its netbook range as tablet PCs take an ever larger share of consumer technology sales but the company has denied this and hinted that it could stand to benefit if other business shift their focus away from netbooks.
Scott Lin, president of Acer Taiwan, told Digitimes that his company intends to trim the range of netbooks its makes available into markets around the world this year but insisted that greater emphasis will be placed on the release of each individual model.
Outlining Acer’s plans more specifically, Mr Lin said that his firm will be aiming to account for close to a third of all netbooks shipped in 2011, which will amount to around ten million units if current projections for the market are on the money.
Acer will of course continue to ship millions of laptops to markets worldwide, with industry experts expecting to see it, and fellow Asian manufacturing giants Asus and Lenovo, deliver devices in the vein of the latest ‘ultra-thin’ Macs from Apple.
For its part, Lenovo recently revealed its plan to establish a separate operating division to focus specifically on tablet PCs and mobile phones, as sales in both sectors continue to increase.
