Canadian firm, Research in Motion – or RIM – have reported yet another quarter of negative growth as their smartphone market share dips below a quarter.
Now commanding only 22% of the smartphone market, RIM are reliant on a successful launch for their PlayBook tablet to boost the company’s fortunes.
The device is scheduled for release in the US and Canada on April 19th, making the next three weeks a nervous time for CEO Jim Balsillie and his colleagues at RIM.
The PlayBook will be available in a 16GB, 32GB or 64GB version, priced at $499, $599 and $699 respectively. A 1GHz dual-core processor will power the 7-inch device and a WSVGA capacitive touch panel will grace the front of the tablet.
Video recording capabilities of 1080p HD footage actually place the PlayBook ahead of the iPad 2 in terms of imaging.
A successful launch of the PlayBook will be key, not only in determining the future of RIM as a tablet manufacturer, but the future of RIM full stop. Some industry analysts are describing BlackBerry as a broken brand, while PaidContent.org predicted a dramatic brand shift from RIM, should the PlayBook not provide the impetus required.
RIM’s executives and investors will be keeping everything crossed as we approach the launch date for PlayBook, a UK launch is expected to follow in June.

Strong sales of its latest MacBook Air have helped Apple overtake several of its rivals and rank at number five in the list of the largest suppliers of PCs to the UK market.
Still behind HP, Acer, Dell and Toshiba, Apple now accounts for just over six per cent of all the personal computers sold in the UK, having increased that share from 5.4 per cent at the end of 2009, Gartner reports.
The research firm’s figures show that there were fewer PCs sold across the country in the final three months of last year, compared with the same period in 2009, but Apple’s MacBook Air managed to buck a generally downward trend.
Despite a difficult Christmas in terms of sales of traditional PCs, there were 5.4 per cent more laptops, desktops and netbooks sold over the course of 2010, compared with 2009.
Acer’s share of the UK PC market was reportedly cut from 19.1 per cent at the end of 2009 to 16.7 per cent at the end of last year, which Gartner puts down to weaker demand for some of its leading netbooks.
Reflecting on the recent findings, Gartner’s research director Ranjit Atwal said: “Uncertain economic factors and unemployment influenced consumers to delay or be conservative with discretionary spending.”
The consumer technology market worldwide, as well as in the UK, is currently being shaken up by the impending introduction of various tablet PCs from the likes of Motorola, Samsung and LG.
Apple was the first to launch a truly popular slate device in the shape of the iPad, of which the company sold 7.3 million worldwide in the final quarter of 2010. Around four million Macs were sold during the same period.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab appeared to be setting the market alight with its rapid shipping, but reports are suggesting nearly 16% of sales of the device are ending in returns.
This news comes hot on the heels of another damaging revelation from Samsung: sales of the Galaxy Tab have not been as high as first reported.
Lee Young-Hee, vice president of Samsung’s mobile communications wing described the actual amount of units sold to consumers as “quite small”.
“Our sell-in was quite aggressive and this fourth-quarter unit [figure] was around two million.” She said, “Then, in terms of sell-out, we believe it was quite small. We believe, as the introduction of a new device requires customers to invest in the device, even though the sell-out wasn’t as fast as we expected, we still believe sell-out was quite okay.”
So, the Galaxy Tab is experiencing slow sales, which aren’t worrying the company too much; but what about the soaring return rate?
Experts have warned that such high return rates are not necessarily a reflection of a poor product; often these returns are the result of “buyer remorse”. This means, the consumer gets home, likes the device but realises they don’t really need a tablet, and return for a full refund.
This is a recognised consumer pattern, particularly with expensive, cutting edge technology.
However, John Packowski of All Things Digital, has highlighted that the iPad’s return rate at American carrier, Verizon is a mere 2%; eight-times lower than that of the Galaxy.
As the Galaxy Tab becomes more established in the market, Samsung will be hoping that these figures start to make better reading for their shareholders.

Acer is reportedly hoping to increase the number of netbooks it ships this year and is expecting to see a number of its rivals in the sector switch their attentions to tablet PCs.
The Taiwanese firm is one of the largest players in the netbook market worldwide and is apparently keen to maintain and possibly even strengthen that position.
There have been rumours recently that Acer would phase out its netbook range as tablet PCs take an ever larger share of consumer technology sales but the company has denied this and hinted that it could stand to benefit if other business shift their focus away from netbooks.
Scott Lin, president of Acer Taiwan, told Digitimes that his company intends to trim the range of netbooks its makes available into markets around the world this year but insisted that greater emphasis will be placed on the release of each individual model.
Outlining Acer’s plans more specifically, Mr Lin said that his firm will be aiming to account for close to a third of all netbooks shipped in 2011, which will amount to around ten million units if current projections for the market are on the money.
Acer will of course continue to ship millions of laptops to markets worldwide, with industry experts expecting to see it, and fellow Asian manufacturing giants Asus and Lenovo, deliver devices in the vein of the latest ‘ultra-thin’ Macs from Apple.
For its part, Lenovo recently revealed its plan to establish a separate operating division to focus specifically on tablet PCs and mobile phones, as sales in both sectors continue to increase.

New sales figures show that Acer’s PCs shipped 2.1 million units in the U.S during the fourth quarter of 2010.
The study, carried out by IT research and advisory firm, Gartner, identified this as representing a 11% share of the market, a marked reduction from the 15% share enjoyed by Acer in the same period of 2009. Apple are now only 1.4% behind Acer in the race for PC dominance.
Gartner also discovered a 6.6% fall in PC sales as a whole in the U.S, so Acer now have a smaller share of a smaller market.
Speculators have hinted that this may be to do with usual netbook customers turning their attentions to tablet devices, specifically Apple’s ipad.
Further information to make Acer quiver; U.S shipments of Apple’s Mac PCs actually grew in the fourth quarter of 2010, experiencing a 24% boost in sales compared to the same period of 2009. Apple have been quick to announce that this impressive figure doesn’t even include sales of iPad devices.
