Devices running on iOS, which means of course iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches, are currently accounting for upwards of five per cent of all internet use in the UK.
Data compiled and published by Net Applications has shown that the UK, along with Australia, has a particularly high proportion of Apple branded products being used to go online.
The prevalence of Apple devices is reckoned to be higher in the UK than in the US, where iOS accounts for 3.4 per cent of all online browsing, and higher than the global average, which stood at 2.06 per cent as of January 2011.
More than a 160 million iOS units have been sold worldwide to date, with the introduction of the iPad just under a year ago having helped to boost an already popular operating system. Apple fans are expecting a second iteration of the world’s most widely-used tablet PC at some point in the first half of this year.
According to Net Applications, Singapore is the country in which iOS devices are currently accounting for the largest share of local internet activity with the island’s figure coming in at just short of ten per cent.
The proportion of internet activity emanating from Apple’s mobile technology is reported to have increased notably during what American analysts refer to as “the holiday period” and what British consumers will probably think of as the run up to Christmas.
Meanwhile, a study released last week by Kelkoo put the UK at the top of a list of Europe’s biggest online shoppers, with £44 billion worth of e-commerce receipts being filed nationwide over the course of 2010.

British Telecom has launched a new app designed to make it easier for its home broadband customers to get online using their Apple iPads.
With two million Wi-Fi hotspots around the UK, BT is among the leading suppliers of internet coverage in the country and its iPad app follows similar offerings for users of Android operated tablets and smartphones.
A mapping service, making clear where your nearest Wi-Fi hotspot is, comes along with the free app, which can now be downloaded by iPad owners around the country, as long as they are on one of BT’s relevant tariffs.
“Our free app for the iPhone and Android devices has proved a huge hit with over 400,000 downloads to date, so launching an app for the iPad was naturally the next step,” commented John Petter, managing director of BT Retail Consumer.
“The app makes accessing Wi-Fi so simple you don’t even have to think about it and represents real value to our customers at a time when more and more people are accessing the internet when they are on the move.”
BT’s Wi-Fi zones tend to be in the busier spots around British cities, coffee shops, motorway service stations, hotels etc and you’ll need a BT internet address and home broadband password in order to get online using your iPad in any of these various locations.
Rumours are currently flying around about what we can expect from a second iteration of the all-conquering iPad, with some sources suggesting they’ll have a front-facing camera and that the graphics capacity will be notably increased.

Browse > Home / Technology / Blog article: Nielsen reveals Middle East demand for internet services via connected devices in 2011 Tweet
The Nielsen Company today revealed the extent to which online consumers in the Middle East intend to use different connected devices to access the Internet in the coming year. Nielsen’s Global Online Survey, conducted across 55 countries, showed that almost half of the Middle East’s online consumers (43%) plan to use a mobile phone to access the Internet while 29% intend to use a handheld multimedia device and 24% plan to access the net via an in-home video game system.
To help the Middle East’s advertising market understand and take advantage of this level of intended activity, The Nielsen Company has added a new module to its Market Intelligence solution to capture Internet access from various connected devices.
In addition to understanding audience visitation from PCs and laptops, the “Device Filtering” module now enables subscribers to see how audiences are accessing the Internet through devices such as Smartphones, games consoles, e-books and tablets.
“We’ve gone beyond who’s simply visiting mobile websites. The advertising industry will now be able to differentiate between the multitude of devices from which people are accessing content on conventional sites”, explains Nielsen’s head of new online EMEA markets, Diego SemprĂșn.
“Consequently, our clients will be able to make better data-driven decisions that improve their media strategies that reflect the new reality of Internet access and take advantage of these new opportunities.”
This new reality is reinforced by the intention of online consumers in the Middle East to purchase connected devices that can access the Internet. More than one-third intend to purchase a Smartphone (32%) or handheld multimedia device (27%) in the coming year, while 24% intend to purchase a Netbook.
